Paris, We Can Be Friends Now

My first trip to Paris was during college in 1992.  I was studying theater in London and extended my trip two weeks to check out Paris, Florence and Rome.  My distinct memories from the trip were staying in a really bad hotel with my travel companion Ashley Hamilton.  I can’t remember the name of the hotel.  But what I do recall is old, dark red velvet interiors with dark wood everywhere. It felt old.  It smelled even older.   And even after I stepped out of the tiny shower, I still felt dirty.  It was that kinda hotel…college budget lodging at it’s finest.

I set out all around Paris to see the sights.  I walked into a store and bought some Chanel make-up and a bottle of perfume that has become my signature fragrance, Quelle que Fleurs.  I was feeling good about my purchase when we hopped into a taxi and headed to the Eiffel Tower.  I must have been so excited about seeing the Tower because I left my bag of goodies in the taxi!  I realized this and quickly turned around to see taxi pull away and into the sea of traffic.  So long bag of beauty goodies.  Paris was not showing me much love and I certainly wasn’t feeling it.  I left Paris thinking I didn’t need to come back any time soon.

We Meet Again

We Meet Again

My second trip to the City of Lights was in December of 2004.  I was about two months pregnant and sicker than I have ever been in my entire life.  I can’t accurately describe how profoundly crappy I felt at the time.  What I can tell you is this.  I was so ill, I begged my first husband to take me home – like back to Arkansas home!  We were on the last five days of a trip that started in Rome on Christmas eve and was going to end up in Paris five days after the New Year.  He assured me I would be fine.  I wasn’t.

I’d hoped this trip would show me Paris in a new light and that I’d fall madly in love with it just like so many of my friends.  Sadly, as you might suspect, it did not.  It was cold, snowy and I was MISERABLE.  You know how it feels the few moments right before you vomit?  That’s exactly how I felt around the clock for three months.  But here’s the catch!  I NEVER threw up once while I was pregnant! I returned home and never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever wanted to see Paris again.  Or my husband, or a penis!  This pregnancy business was for the damn birds!

As you can imagine it was with great reluctance that I returned to Paris recently.  The trip was booked two years ago.  I decided I did in fact want to go back to Paris but with Corbin. This was his first trip to Europe.  I was very excited to show him his first European city.  Looking back it seems odd that I took him to the one place I said I didn’t want to go back to!  I would pack up and move to Florence in a heart beat, so why we didn’t start there seems odd now that I’m writing this.  Oh, well.  There will be time for Italian travel later.

What I discovered was the source of my second trip morning sicking, nightmare turned out to be the perfect cure for Paris dislike.  Corbin and I had a blast!

Crepes, Coca- Cola Lite and Smile

Crepes Coca-Cola Lite and Smiles

We ate some amazing food at L’Office and Spring.  We hung out in a neighborhood park in the Marais and devoured a picnic lunch.  We set out on a quest to find the best macaroon.  The best macaroon in our opinion can be purchased at Dalloyau. His favorite thing we did? – dinner at the Eiffel Tower.  It’s a super touristy thing to do but he’s 9-years-old and absolutely loved it.  During dinner we witnessed two marriage proposals and visited with an Australian couple who were renewing their vows after 15 years of marriage. So Corbin was right, Paris is the City of Love. Keep in mind he’s 9-years-old, so he was more jazzed about the Lego store than the Louvre. We saw both. But we made a return trip to the Lego store. Shocker, right?

So Paris, the third time was the charm. We can be friends.  Like the kind of friends that see each other after years of not talking and seem to pick up where they left off without skipping a beat. I was worried it would be the third strike and well, you’d be out!

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City is underway despite the nasty weather hitting the city as I sit here and write this post!  I was looking super fashionable yesterday decked out in Maje leather shorts, a Haute Hippie sweater, Proenza Schouler jacket – that I bought under the expert eye of Jonesboro’s Jonathan Parkey and my Khirma Eliazov bag.

Today, I’m kicking it in jeans, a sweatshirt, a scarf, wool socks and my Ugg house slipper – sans any make-up.   It’s freezing cold and a Nor’Easter just blew through the city. I do have an improv class to make so I’m going to be FORCED to leave the apartment.

Scoring a ticket to a fashion show is a tricky endeavor.  I’ve been to several shows with friends who work in the fashion industry.  I’ve also been as a guest with Exclusive Resorts.  ER offers some amazing “experiences” in addition to their homes in the travel club portfolio.  Think Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, Wimbeldon, heli-hiking in Canada and the Food and Wine festival in Aspen…just to name a few.

This week me and my girlfriends, Victoria and Alona, were guests at the BCBG show.  Our host from Miami’s GR8 Group, Luca Pavanelli, made sure we were well taken care of for the show.  As the shows go, it’s never really about the clothes.  It’s really about the people celebrities in the front row.

Yesterday, my friend Denise Albert and I took in the Nanette Lepore runway show. I have been a huge fan of Nanette Lepore for many years.  Her clothes fit like a dream, are feminine without being prissy – I will never be described as prissy- and are made in the U.S.A.

Again it was all about the front row and who was there.  Edie Falco from Nurse Jackie, Cat Greenleef from Talk Stoop, Kelly Rutherford from Gossip Girl, Peyton List, Condola Rashad and mega watt stylist June Ambrose held down the front row!

The collection was beautiful!  I must say the Fall and Winter collections are by far more interesting than Spring and Summer. With the deep colors, decadent fabrics and lux furs, the clothes are always inspiring.  Especially when it’s 14 degrees outside and you are wearing leather shorts!  Hey, I took one for the fashion team!  I don’t do those leg work outs for nothing!

Sundance 2014

180* view from The Montage Spa

180* view from The Montage Spa in Deer Valley

After six years at the Sundance Film Festival, I know it is safe to say I am a veteran of the experience from top to bottom…almost.  I will let you in on the “almost” part later on.  As far as the films, restaurants, shopping, accommodations and spas, I have this trip mastered. It didn’t start out that way our first year, when I arrived without tickets to any of the films and a deep fear of getting on skis.

With some help from the superb concierge team with Exclusive Resorts, who we travel with, I figured out the festival ticket scene and scored a great ticket package for the following year. You see, getting tickets to the films is a lot like getting into a private New York City school.  There is an application process, a lottery that involved three different dates and then the final tickets selection process.  It’s a tedious process that takes some thought, time and money.

Sundance logo

Deciding which films to see is an in depth research project, at least for me.  I learned after that first year, if you don’t put in the time to research the films you may very well end up seeing some total crap on the silver screen.  For example, that first year I saw a film that involved two guys who were neighbors in LA.  One was out of a job and enjoyed dressing up as a clown while the guy next door would spend the afternoons giving him hand jobs and various other sexual favors.  The second centered around this couple in B.F.E. Alaska.  On a drug enhanced ride back home, the woman in the film is decapitated by a mail box as she hangs her head out of the truck window while her boyfriend drives.  I hate it when bad films happen to me.  There is no way to get those four hours of my life back. A little research is a good thing.

About three years into this trek out West, I gave up on skiing all together. I really wanted to enjoy it and had dreams of sliding down the mountain in Deer Valley with my husband, stopping to take in the majestic scenery and then making our way to the bar at the bottom of the slopes and then hitting the hot tub.  Sounds perfectly entertaining and sexy, right? It was for a while and then I realized that I really do not like to ski.  I hung up my skis one afternoon and that was the end of my downhill skiing life.  Letting go of this ski fantasty freed up more time and resources to enjoy the spa at The Montage in Deer Valley and more films at the festival. So in this one area of Sundance, I am not a veteran!

I highly recommend Park City and Deer Valley during the Sundance Film Festival.  There are so many things for the entire family to enjoy from skiing, dining, spa-ing, shopping and just chilling on Main Street with the eclectic crowd of film makers, actors and industry movers and shakers! I’ll let the photos tell the rest of this years story. Oh, what to pack?  The last photo is me in what I call my Sundance wardrobe wearing my Monclear puffer, Vince fur vest, Hudson skinny jeans, Manrico black cashmere sweater, Rachel Comey booties, Oliver Peoples aviators and Khirma Eliazov handbag. I wore some version of this the entire trip.  As did just about everyone else in Utah last week!  Luxury Travel Mom, Kim-Marie, often asks what I’m wearing, so I thought I’d include it in the post.

Laguna Beach Magic

Travel Intention

Travel Intention

The Instagram snapshot above – written in crayon –  contains my intentions for the week I spent recently at The Montage in Laguna Beach.  Who needs to set intentions for a luxurious vacation?  Well, I do! I actually think you should set an intention every morning before your feet hit the floor and you drag your lazy bones out of bed!  But when you are investing in a luxurious vacation, it is imperative to keep your intentions in the forefront of your mind.  Why let the stress and worries you left behind infiltrate your time away?  Especially when you are camped out on the cliff over looking the Pacific Ocean at The Montage.

A View to a Chill

A View to a Chill

This magnificent view never gets old. The Montage is one of my family’s favorite get aways and this stunning view from the lobby terrace is one of the reasons why.  That pool is the prime place to Be Happy.  Be Relaxed.  Be Grateful! See the photo below for proof!

Jet Lagged Traveling Du0

Even when you arrive 6 hours before check in time, you can check out at the pool and slip into vacation mode immediately!  When you are perched over the Pacific, it is really easy to start to unwind and slip into vacation mode.

One of the reasons my family loves this place is that it has something for all of us, especially Corbin.  He LOVES The Paintbox, which is the kids program at the hotel.  The staff is top notch and most often Corbin doesn’t want to leave when it is time to go. They even send him birthday cards every July. No trip here is complete without the obligatory face painting session. Or the trip across the street to CVS to get some make-up remover to get all of this off of his sweet little face! I don’t recommend doing this the day before your family photo shoot on the beach, though.  All of that black face paint can be a real pain to get off of an 8-year-old boy.

This year, we made the trek down to LegoLand.  I have to confess, I am not an amusement park fan AT ALL.  But, as parents we do things with our kids that often times we’d rather not be doing, right?  Legoland did not disappoint.  The weather was perfect. There was not a huge crowd. We all really enjoyed the day and the fun photo ops!

As I mentioned, I dislike hate amusement parks.  But I adore LOVE my child.  And look at his face in the photo below…that’s a look of shear excitement on his face.  And one of complete terror on mine!

Last photo of the day at Legoland

There really is no huge reason to leave The Montage but we wanted to shake things up a bit since we were there for seven days.  The SoCal food scene is always intriguing.  The Watermarc was recommended and we found ourselves there TWICE on this trip.  One of my favorite dishes was the watermelon, tuna and tomato skewers. As a southerner, if an entree offers up tomatos and watermelon in the same dish, I’m going to order it.  The tuna and touch of seaweed salad really amped up the flavors.

Tomato Watermelon Tuna skewers..second order!

But I have to tell you, when I found out about the home made Ding Dongs on the dessert menu, I had to order them. As a child, my grandmother always kept a box of Ding Dongs in her “treat” drawer.  Some foods make my soul happy. These chocolate dipped cakes do it for me.  And bring them to me in a Rolling Stones lunch box and I’m a really a happy camper.  Momma’s gettin’ some satisfaction!

The Lunch Box

The Lunch Box

With all of the time I have spent at The Montage, I have yet to find a bad view. Even the view from the gym is spectacular. I snapped this from the treadmill following my evening of Ding Dongs! Afterwards, I checked into the spa which I highly recommend. They offer a wide selection of amazing services and have a great boutique that is well edited with skin care products from Eminence and super stylish clothing from R and R Surplus. Speaking of shopping, if you can drag yourself away from the fabulous boutique in the spa and gift shop, I recommend two other places in Laguna Beach for some retail therapy.  First stop is 11th Moon for a well curated selection of clothing and accessories from Peter Pillota, Raquel Allegra and Rachel Comey.  Second stop is Tuvalu.  I picked up some great treasures for my apartment in this shop on Forest Avenue.  My basket of shiny sea shells and my huge chunk of coral make for great conversations and are reminders of one of my favorite vacations spots.

My absolute favorite thing about The Montage is just relaxing by the pool.  It takes a bit of time to unwind from the frantic pace of living in New York City.  But once I’ve turned down the dial and quieted the committee of monkeys in my head, there is no better place to chill than in a lounge chair here with the breeze coming off the ocean.  I can read a highly recommended thriller tabloid magazine, people watch celebrity watch, sleep off a hangover nap and play with my filters on Instagram!

I see you end of summer....I know!

Our poolside lounging includes some fantastic food and beverages from The Mosaic Grill. I’m typically a Veuve Clicquot champagne lady but opted for something new.  I found myself craving something green and this is what was suggested.  The Cucumber Crusher.

After a full week in my version of paradise, Corbin came back from dinner with this heart stopping note and sparkly ring from the gift shop.  This child slays me.  He knows his Momma well.  And we can all use an evil eye to keep bad things away from us. I wish I could just bottle him up sometimes and keep him 8 forever.

Leaves me speechless

I leave you with this stunning sunset photo.  There is my joie de vivre, y’all. Words really can’t do any more for it.

Cruising around Europe on The World

Imagine seeing the world from a ship and docking in different ports of call around the globe.  Can you see yourself popping off the ship in ever chic Monaco? Or even packing up your scuba gear and heading out for a day of diving along the Great Barrier reef in Australia?  I think that would be an awesome way to live and see the world.  It’s hard to comprehend how that would actually work in my present day life.  My 8-year-old would be the victim of home (ship) schooling and my husband would most likely wanna throw himself overboard after a months of not physically being in his office!  But, one day I would love to do that.

How do I know this about myself you might be wondering?  We spent seven days on The World along the coast of Portugal and Spain recently. The World is a luxurious residential cruise ship that travels the entire world over a two year time span.  Think of it as a mega high end floating neighborhood.  The “guests” on board are actually residents who own the apartments.  For many, this home is most like not their one and only.  There are residents from places like Texas and the Congo or Britain and Utah.  Some, like myself, are Exclusive Resort’s members who enjoy a trip on board when we can get a highly sought after place during the leg of a journey that we want to be a part of!

We boarded The World in Lisbon, Portugal.  I’ve traveled to many destinations in Europe but this was my first visit to Lisbon!

The World docked in Lisbon

The World docked in Lisbon

The World was docked near the Ponte de 25 Abril suspension bridge.  And yes, it looks very similar to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.  FYI -The Ponte de 25 Abril bridge is the longest of its type in Europe.

Ponte de 25 Abril bridge

Our time was short in Lisbon so I do what I like to do best, first!  We found some food and beverages!

Sangria, anyone?

Sangria, anyone?

Maybe it was the jet lag and over load of sangria, but I was not overly impressed with Lisbon.  The one thing that stood out in my mind were the beautiful tiled buildings. They are stunning. As are the hand painted tile murals that can be found all over this city.

We set sail late one night and I knew immediatley that we were heading into some rough water.  Needless to say, I was ill and horizontal for over 24 hours.  The only thing worse than sea sickness is morning sickness! When the seas calmed down and we cruised closer to Ferol, Spain, I drug myself up onto the top deck of The World and took in this amazing sunset from the Bali beds.

Sunnies at sunset on The World

Profoundly hung over from being sea sick, I finally got off The World in Ferol, Spain on Sunday afternoon. Just in time for the weekly market and octopus boil.  The market sounded fantastic.  The octopus?  Not so much.  I was still on a diet of crackers and water!  But I’m journalist who loves a photo op and couldn’t let this pass me by.  Although the thought of the moment when I actually took this photo still makes my stomach flip!

Yummy....not so much!

Yummy….not so much!

If you travel enough, there will come a time when you get sick.  Really sick. And can’t take in all that there is to do where ever you are.  This happened to me in Ferol.  I wish I had an amazing bit of advice to offer to you about Ferol, but I do not.  I can tell you this though.  Everything in Ferol on Sunday is closed with the exception of a few restaurants.

I was more than ready to head to Bordeax.  The captain navigated The World down the Garonne River to Bordeaux.

You are here...blue dot!

You are here…blue dot!

With a ship full of oenophiles, there were lots of people on deck sipping wine checking out the vineyards as we made our way down the river.  We learned all about the regional wines from the chateaus that were lined up along the river.

The World garnered a rather large group of on-lookers as we docked along the river in the heart of Bordeaux.

With my land legs back under me and an appetite for some real food, we set out for dinner.  The World’s concierge Pierre highly recommended Le Garbrielle which was a short walk away from our new floating home. Dinner was well, you can see for yourself…

First and last time with sea urchin

First and last time with sea urchin

When you have to rely on your waiter to translate the menu for you, sometimes you end up with things like fancy pants sea urchin for dinner.  I speak a little Spanish and but no French other than joie de vivre, y’all!  I could only eat one of them, much less all three.  When the waiter returned to the table, he asked me if this was my first time eating sea urchin.  I told him it was my first time eating this version of the fishy dish. And he says in his smug, French accent, “and I’lll assume your last time?” “Indeed, sir,” I replied. “But I’ll take another glass of that Chateau Brown white wine!”

The wine and dessert were the winner of the evening.  Shocker, right?  I even had some of the Chateau Brown shipped back home.

The best part of the meal

The best part of the meal

Bordeaux was such a beautiful city.  We had a great time just walking around the city. We didn’t have a huge agenda which is not normally the way I ltravel.  I did have one small agenda.  I came across a list of sought after European beauty products and picked up a few along the way.  I typically scout out all of the best places to shop and dine. But for many reasons on this trip, I just decided to wing it.  I found some great food wine. I also found some great shops shoes!

The most impressive part of this European adventure was our apartment on The World.

The best way to see The World

The best way to see The World

Here is small peak into what it looked like.  We had a lot of space in the two bedrooms and the living and dining rooms.  This is not your typical “cruise ship” experience.  The only similarities between a cruise ship and The World is that they both float and carry a lot of people.  That is really where it ends! I’ll have more about the details on The World in another post.
